Sinners cannot endure God’s displeasure

fullerThe only question that remains is, whether thou canst endure his displeasure. And this must surely be a forlorn hope! Can thine heart endure, and thine hands be strong, in the day that he shall deal with thee? Think of the wrath to come. If it were founded in caprice or injustice, supported by conscious innocence, you might possibly bear it; but, should you perish, you will be destitute of this resource. Conscience will eternally say Amen to the justice of your sufferings. If you had mere justice done you, unmixed with mercy, your sufferings would be more tolerable than they will be; but if you perish, you must have your portion with Bethsaida and Chorazin. Goodness gives an edge to justice. The displeasure of a kind and merciful being– and such is the wrath of the Lamb–is insupportable.

Again, a proof that the only real basis for religion is fear.

Thank you friend for your comment.

You state: “Again, a proof that the only real basis for religion is fear.”

Let’s apply your statement to the laws of the land. Why would anyone obey the laws of the land? You got it. It is fear of being punished. So is fear of being punished the only real basis for the laws of the land?

Absolutely not. The real basis for the laws of the land is so that man’s society will have some stability and not be in total chaos.

I agree that there are many different religions, but there is only one true way of salvation and that is through Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the Judge of the world. All a Christian does it point to a Higher judge and a higher court. This judge is the one who gave the moral law of which our governments laws are built on.

So in the end if there is no God, then you have no foundation from which to account for the moral law, on which our laws of the land are based.

  2. January 5, 2013 at 7:10 am

You are confusing the basis of the law with the reason for some bad people not to violate it.

Luckily, most of our laws are not based on the principles of your evil religion. Fortunately for humanity, we learned that a god can only be as good as the people who invented him – and that we can be better than the people living 2.000 years ago.

As there is probably no god, religion has no foundation, while morality can be based on much better principles than some claim that a mass-murdering psychopath called “god” said so.

    • January 5, 2013 at 7:31 am

No. I am simply stating that you have no basis for moral law, whether it be the law of the land or the paying back money that you borrowed from your brother.

If you believe that the only motivation for Christianity is fear, then in essence you must be assuming that Christianity is not true? On what evidence do you base this. Have you disproved Christ’s resurrection?

      • January 5, 2013 at 7:47 am

You also do err when you state that my religion is evil. When skeptics attack Christianity they attack the resurrection, not Christ system of morality. Even agnostics, skeptics, and yes atheist deem Christ Sermon on the Mount as the highest moral teaching of all time.

You also state that a persons god is only as good as the person who invented them. I agree that that is true when it concerns all religions other than Christinaity. Men will invent religions that give them exactly what they want when they die; say for instance Islam. Muslims believe that when they die they will get an eternal drunken orgy.

This is not true of the Christian faith. Christinaity teaches that God is holy, just , righteous, pure, infinite, eternal, unchanging, and so forth. No one wishes for the God of the Bible, my friend. They want a God that will allow them to slide by on a few offenses. The Christian God does not allow anyone to slide by but every deed is brought before his judgment as well as every thought.

Finally if their is no God, then you have no bases for morality. You can not account for why it is better to live good or bad. If God doesn’t exist and we die and cease to exist, then what we do in this life will not really matter one way or another.

Our civil laws are built upon the underlying foundation of morality that flows from God. It is true that man has tried to change the laws to allow him to do, whatever he desires, against God’s word, but the basic laws of society were established because of God’s commands.

      • January 5, 2013 at 8:18 am

Of course there is a basis for moral law, we just don’t pretend it’s absolute of from some divine being. There are more than enough good bases on which to build a moral system. None of these system claims to be absolute, but let’s be honest: Your moral system only claims to be, while being evil and completely random.

And if I need to disprove some of your nonsense, please use that time to disprove the flying spaghetti monster. You can’t? Well, too bad, welcome to the church of the FSM. YOU claim something, YOU prove it. You want us to think that there is some divine being, so it’s your job to prove it. Otherwise I hope you have much time, because suddenly it’s your turn to disprove fairies, all other religions, etc.

And don’t make me laugh. Did you even read the bible? Or are you one of these cherry-picking Christians who only read the nicer parts, not the part where god commands slaughter, slavery and rape – or commits slaughter himself? The book describes the most evil being ever invented: God. Calling him “good” does not change that his actions are pure evil. Even Jesus cannot be called “good” when judged by his words.

And again you show your lack of knowledge: The basic rules, for example the commandments, were already there long before some Semitic tribes invented them again. Other cultures had much greater codified laws. And our laws and basic humans rights today were only gained after throwing off the burden of religious dogma.

My friend, I again thank you for your comment.

As usual those who state that Christianity is untrue or that God probably doesn’t exist will most of the time not engage in any real debate. You have moved off subject because you cannot answer anything I have stated. You have also not giving any defense for where morality originated.

You have no bases for morality. I debated this a few weeks ago with an atheist and just like you have done, he could not account for morality, except for stating that men make it up as a society. I then asked, “Which society? Democracy, Marxism, Communism, etc….” He also changed the subject.

I wish that I could at least get one atheist to engage in meaningful debate and that will stick to the topic. Of course, the age of the rational atheist is gone.

Finally I do not have to disprove your views. If you will ever notice that in a debate on this subject, the affirmative or positive view goes first? Then the atheist has to tear down or refute it. This is because everyone knows God exist as Romans tells us.

Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Rom 1:19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
Rom 1:20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Rom 1:21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Rom 1:22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

You my friend have supressed the truth of God, just as Romans 1:18 states. You admit its true by appealing to the Old Testament where God judges nations for their sins of child sacrifice. If one portion is true, the other is also. Do not be inconsistent. Do not appeal to and affirm one portion of scripture and then deny the other.

You are a sinner that has transgressed a holy God. You know that. You choose to disbelieve it in order to be able to live with a clear conscience. Yet you know your conscience isn’t clear, but is guilty and that is why you visit sites trying to argue against belief in God. You see, know one feels compelled to visit sites that are based on a flying spaghetti monster or Santa Claus. This is because everyone realizes these things are myth. If you thought Christianity to be a myth, then you wouldn’t be here. Your conscience convicts you and therefore you have got to try and suppress its voice. You have rejected the testimony of the Son of God, which by the way was given by eye witnesses and this is how any proof is usualy made, even in courts of law.

I appeal to you to think for yourself, instead of repeating lame arguments about spaghetti monsters that even children know don’t exist.

You live inconsistently by borrowing from my worldview in order to operate in this world. You want morality without God, but this cannot be. If God doesn’t exist, then neither does morality.

Christ has commanded you to repent and believe. What will you do with this command?

      • January 5, 2013 at 8:56 am

As a side note you claim that our society today exist by throwing off religious dogma. You evidently do not know the history of the world. Today’s society of democracy came about because of the Reformation and is based largely on John Calvin’s Reformations in Switzerland. The good treatment of women is based on Christianity. The dissolving of the slave trade is because of Christianity. The best health facilities in the world are there because of Christianity. I have not seen any benefits in today’s societies that have come about through Atheism.

It is true that some folks who call themselves Christians have distorted this name by killing and pillaging people throughout the history of the world. But the best hospitals, the feeding of the poor, the taking care of folks in war torn areas, the fight against murdering babies in the womb has all been by Christians.

Atheism, on the other hand, has always lead to people like Hitler.

Now Christ has commanded you to repent and believe.

Im sorry my friend, rudeness will not get you any more comments posted.

        Thank you for your time.

For all those who read: I have to aprove comments before they show up on this page. So when the one I am debating with will not stick to issues, but instead begins to reply with rude behaviour, then I end the conversation. I am not going to spend time debating rude comments, but only the issues of the post.

      • January 7, 2013 at 1:26 pm

I do want to mention one last point before leaving this discussion.

In my opponents last comment, of which I did not allow up because of rudeness, my opponent mentioned that they goggled hospitals on the net and most were paid for by taxpayers instead of Christians.

My answer: My opponent really lacks any knowledge of the founding of this country. Who were the taxpayers, but the Christians who settled this nation. To say that most hospitals were paid for by taxpayers and not Christians would be to think that state run hospitals has been the norm throughout human history. If my opponent would study they would find that even the first scientist, who developed a lot of the foundational methods for modern medicine, were Christians.
