The Wednesday Word: He Came, He Sought, He Saved

For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:10.

He Has Come

What a beautiful word is that word ‘Come.’ The Lord says;

“Come now let us reason together” (Isaiah 1:18).

“Come unto me all you that are weary and heavy laden” (Matthew 11:28).

“Come ye blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for thee” (Matthew 25:34).

“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly (John 10:10).

And; “….this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven (Acts 1:11).

What a marvelous little word is the word ‘COME’.

He has Come to Seek

In the Old Testament, in Deuteronomy 4:29, we are told “..seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.”

What a wonderful promise, but no one attains to it. Such a degree of passion for the Lord was and is unreachable. Seek with all your heart and soul ?? …that scuppered the most diligent of us. This is why we read in Romans 3:11 ‘there is none that seeks God.’

But because of our inability to seek with all our heart and soul, Emmanuel, God with us, came to this earth to seek us. In Christ, we are now perfect seekers.

Adam, our first Father was sought by God, but Adam ran away. That’s where we learned our skills of avoiding God. Adam wasn’t looking for God, He was desperate to escape from his Creator and thus went into hiding. Sin had made both him and his descendants cowards.

Jesus came to this Earth to seek. He came and sought out the big uneducated fishermen on the shores of Galilee.

He sought the young, fit tax-collector, Zacchaeus and by His Spirit, He is still seeking today!

But not only did He come to seek …

He Has Come to Save

The grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men (Titus 2:11). Notice the precision of this verse. Jesus (the Grace of God) has come to bring salvation. He didn’t come to attempt to bring salvation. He had and has a mission, a task, a goal. He has come with a purpose.

He didn’t come to teach academic studies.

He didn’t come to settle political differences.

He didn’t come to tickle the ears of His listeners.

He came to seek and to save.

He came to make an atonement by the shedding of His blood. He came to save us from the penalty, pleasure and ultimately the presence of sin.

In Conclusion

Finally, who did He come to seek and to save? He came to seek and to save the ‘lost’. And here’s the truth of the matter: until a person is lost they cannot be found!

I love the following story. George Whitefield, one of the greatest Gospel ministers since the days of the apostles, had a brother who was far from God.

One day as the Countess of Huntingdon was witnessing to him over a cup of tea he said to her,

“I know what you have said is very proper, and I believe in the infinite mercy and goodness of God. But I do not believe it applies to me, for I am a lost man.”

The Countess put down her tea and said, “I am glad to hear it, Mr. Whitefield!”

“Madam,” he said, “I did not think you would rejoice and glory in a thing so terrible as that.”

“I am glad to hear you say you are lost Mr. Whitefield,” she said, “for it is written that Jesus Christ came to seek and to save that which was lost.”

His eyes sparkled, and he said, “I thank God for that text, and for the extraordinary power with which it has now come into my heart.”

He died later that night.

And that’s the Gospel Truth!

The Wednesday Word: The Wonderful Number 7

There is something magnificent about the number seven in Scripture.

It is the number of completeness, perfection and rest.

Consider these sevens:

There were 7 days of creation.

There are 7 days of the week.

It was the 7th animal that was sacrificed at Noah’s sacrifice.

Joshua marched around Jericho 7 times.

7 priests with 7 trumpets also marched around Jericho.

On the 7th day, they trooped around the walls 7 times.

Naaman washed 7 times in the Jordan.

Elijah prayed 7 times.

Every 7th day was a Sabbath.

Every 7th year was a Sabbath year.

Every 7 times 7 years was a year of Jubilee.

Three of the feasts of Israel lasted 7 days.

Between the first and second feasts, there were 7 days.

There were 7 days of the feast of Passover.

Jesus is the seven-fold “I AM.”

There are 7 petitions in the Lord’s Prayer.

7 loaves were multiplied into 7 basketfuls.

Jesus performed 7 miracles on the Sabbath.

The term “First and the Last” is used 7 times.

There are 7 seals in the Book of Revelation.

There were 7 churches,

7 candlesticks,

7 stars,

7 spirits before the throne of God.

Before His crucifixion, Christ passed through 7 trials.

There were 7 accusations against Him.

There were 7 questions from Pilate to Christ, and there were 7 sayings from the cross.

In the book of Hebrews, seven titles refer to Christ.

1) He is the Heir of all things (Hebrews 1:2),

2) The Captain of our salvation (2:10),

3) The Apostle (3:1),

4) The ‘Author of salvation (5:9),

5) The Forerunner (6:20),

6) The High Priest (10:21)

7) The Author and finisher of our faith (12:2).

What a seven-fold declaration of His perfection.

Then in Revelation 5:6 “…, lo, in the midst of the throne …stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.”

Again, note the number 7. Observe how the Lamb had seven horns. The horn was a symbol of authority and strength and being that there are seven horns, we are being pointed to the perfect power and omnipotence of the Lord Jesus. Christ is omnipotent and is, therefore, God! Only He who is omnipotent can exert supremacy.

The seven eyes present a picture of the Lamb’s perfect Omniscience. This language corresponds directly with Zechariah 3:9 and 4:10, where we encounter God’s omniscience displayed by the seven eyes. God knows everything; He is Omniscient! Let’s face it; if He didn’t know everything, He wouldn’t be much of a God! He would be a very limited sort of a fellow and certainly no one to whom we could bring our deepest concerns and questions. If indeed God does not know all things I, for one, would be in a panic for who then could shepherd me?

Spurgeon tells the story of how a great Grecian artist was fashioning an image for a temple and was diligently carving the back part of the goddess. Someone said to him, “You need not finish that part of the statue because it is to be built into the wall.”

He replied, “The gods can see in the wall.”

The artist had the wrong God but the right idea of omniscience. The Lord Christ sees everything; He’s Omniscient.

The Seven Spirits sent forth are a declaration of Christ’s Omnipresence!

As you know, Omnipresence is one of the mighty attributes of God (Isaiah 66:1). Although God is not referred to directly in scripture as being Omnipresent, we know that His omnipresence is related to His omnipotence and omniscience. All three of these attributes work in concert. The fact that He is everywhere (omnipresent) means He knows everything (omniscience) and that He is everywhere (omnipresent) establishes that there is nowhere from which His power is excluded (omnipotence).

We are saved by He who is perfect.

And that’s the Gospel Truth!

What tends to the Glory and Beauty of a true Gospel Church

That which Primarily tends to the Glory of a Church is the Foundation on which it is Built, which is Jesus Christ. Now this is a blessed and glorious Foundation.117

I. In respect of God the Father, who laid this Foundation in his eternal Purpose, Counsel, and Decree; Behold I lay in Sion:118 and this is as the result of his infinite Wisdom, Love and Mercy to his Elect.

II. In respect had unto Christ himself, who is this Foundation.

(1.) He is a Suitable Foundation.

1st. In respect to the Glory of God in all his Attributes.

2ly. In respect to our Good; the answering all our wants, who are united to him, or built upon him.

3ly. In respect of the preciousness of Christ, as a Foundation; a Stone; a precious Stone.

4ly. In respect to the Durableness of it, i.e. a tryed Stone; a sure Foundation.119

Brethren, a Foundation of a House must of necessity be laid; no House can be built without a good Foundation, that will stand firm, and unmovable; it is the strongest part of the Building, and it beareth all the weight of the whole Superstructure: So doth Jesus Christ.

III. The Beauty and Glory of a true Church, consists in the true and regular, or right Constitution of it; nothing being wanting that is Essential to it, upon this account.

IV. It consisteth in the Excellency, Glory, and Suitableness of the materials ’tis Built with, answering to the Foundation, all precious Stones, lively Stones; all regenerated Persons.120

V. In that all the Stones be well Hewed and Squared; all made fit for the Building, before laid in. Were it thus, there would not be so great a Noise of the Hammer and Ax, in Church Discipline, as indeed there is. It was not thus in the Type, I mean in Solomon’s Temple.121

VI. It’s Beauty and Glory consisteth in that all the Stones being not only united by the Spirit, to Christ the Foundation, but also to one another in sincere Love and Affection. In whom all the Building, fitly Framed together, groweth up unto an holy Temple in the Lord.122

VII. It consisteth in the Holiness and Purity of the Lives and Conversations of all the Members: Be ye Holy, for I am Holy.123 Holiness becomes thy House, O God, for Ever.124

VIII. It consisteth in the sweet Union and Concord that ought to be in the Church; all like the Horses in Pharoah’s Chariot, drawing together:125 Endeavouring to keep the Unity of the Spirit in the Bond of Peace.126 By this shall all Men know ye are my Disciples, if you Love one another.

IX. In their having the divine Presence with them: Or when the Glory of God fills his Temple.127.

X. In keeping out all unsanctified, or unclean Persons, or if they get in, to purge them out by a strict and holy Discipline, or else it will soon lose its Beauty.128

XI. In that Zeal and Equality that should be shewed in all to keep up the Honour, Peace, and Comfort of the Church, and the Ministry thereof.129

XII. In the Administration of right Discipline; to see no neglect nor delaying of Justice, thro carelessness, or Partiality: (1.) No ways partaking of other Mens Sins; which may be done by Conniving at it; (2.) By Lessening or Extenuating of it (3.) By Countenancing, or any ways Incouraging any in Sin. (4.) By not Restoring a Brother, that confesses his Sin when overtaken. (5.) Not bringing in a just Charge against an Offender, nor rebuking him; and yet have Communion with him.

2ly. Not to wrest Judgment, out of it’s true and right Channel: Nor to inflict a greater censure than the Law of Christ requires on any.

3ly. Timely to acquit, and discharge a penitent Person.

4ly. Not to do any thing out of Prejudice, but in Love, and Bowels, of affection; and to do all in Christ’s Name, or by his authority.

XIII. To Sympathize with the Afflicted, Succour the Tempted, and Relieving the Poor and Distressed: Rejoicing with them that Rejoice, and Mourning with them that Mourn.

XIV. To speak evil of no Man; not only speaking no evil of their Brethren, but of no Man, to his hurt or injury, detracting from his Worth and Honour: See Sirach, Whether it be to Friend or Foe, talk not of other Men’s Lives; and if thou canst, without Offence, reveal them not.130 We must not discourse his Faults, unless in a Gospel-way; and that too, to amend the Person, and not out of Passion, or Prejudice to expose him, but out of Love to his Soul. Yet we may speak of the evils of others, (1.) When called to do it, in a Legal or Gospel way; and it is a Sin then to conceal his Crime. (2.) Or when it is to prevent another, who is in danger to be Infected by his Company, or ill Example. (3.) Or in our own just Defence and Vindication. Moreover, consider the evil of Reproaching of others.

First as to the causes why some do it.

I. One Cause is from want of Love: Nay from Malice; and Hatred.

1. From the Baseness, ill Nature, and Cruelty of the accusers Disposition.

2. ’Tis occasioned from that itch, of talking and medling in the Affairs of other Men.

3. Or perhaps to raise their own Esteem and Honour, some Degrade their Brother; which is Abominable.

Consider it is theft, or Robbery; nay, and ‘tis worse than to Rob a Man of his Goods, because thou takest away that which perhaps thou canst not restore again.

Moreover consider, That such who reproach others, lay themselves open thereby to Reproach.

4. Moreover know, he that Receives, or Hearkens to the Scandal, is as Guilty as the Accuser; he is like a person that receives Stolen Goods, and so is as bad as the Thief.

This being one of the Grand and Notorious Evils of these Days I speak the more to it.

If you abominate this evil, and avoid it, you will shine in Grace and Vertue the more clearly.

Alas, in our days, some that would be thought to be great Professers stick not to vilifie Christ’s Ministers, even some of the best of Men; and are so full of Malice, they care not what wrong they do to their Brethren, nor to the truth it self, or interest of God, and so expose themselves to a lasting shame, and their Spirit, and Practice, to an abhorrance;131 they are like cursed Cham who discovered his Fathers nakedness;132 these persons violate all Laws, both Humane and Divine.

3ly. When they bear one anothers Burdens, and so fulfill the Law of Christ:133 And that you may do this, consider where is that Church in which there are no Burdens to be Born.

[Motives thus to do.]

1. Consider what a Burden Jesus Christ hath born for thee.

2. What a Burden thou hast to bear of thine own.134

3. Mayst not thou in some things be a Burden to thy Brethren?

4. Wouldst thou not have others bear thy Burden.

5. May not God cause thee to bear a more heavy Burden; because thou canst not bear thy Brother’s?

6. ’Tis a fulfilling the Law of Love, nay the Law of Christ.135

XV. The Glory and Beauty of a Congregation, is the more manifest, when the Authority of the Church, and the Dignity of the Pastoral Office is maintained. How great was the Evil of the gain-saying of Corah?136 The Apostle speaks of some that are Selfwilled Presumptious, who are not afraid to speak evil of Dignities.137

God has put a Glory and high Dignity upon the Church and in it’s Authority and Power; Whom ye bind on Earth shall be bound in Heaven.

Moreover, the Pastoral Office, is an Office of Dignity; they are called Rulers, Angels, Fathers.138 For any therefore to cast contempt on the Church, or Pastor, is a great evil, and a reproach to Christ, and tends to Disorder and Confusion.139

Lastly, When Holiness, Righteousness, Charity, Humility, and all true Piety is prest upon the Consciences of every Member, and appears in the Minister: also that all strive to excell therein, with their uttermost Care and Diligences.140

Christ was not of the world in office

Spurgeon 62. Again: you are not of the world in your office. Christ’s office had nothing to do with worldly things. “Art thou a king then?” Yes; I am a king; but my kingdom is not of this world. “Art thou a priest?” Yes; I am a priest; but my priesthood is not the priesthood which I shall soon lay aside, or which shall be discontinued as that of others has been. “Art thou a teacher?” Yes; but my doctrines are not the doctrines of morality, doctrines that concern earthly dealings between man and man simply; my doctrine cometh down from heaven. So Jesus Christ, we say, is “not of the world.” He had no office that could be termed a worldly one, and he had no aim which was in the least worldly. He did not seek his own applause, his own fame, his own honor; his very office was not of the world. And, O believer! what is thy office? Hast thou none at all? Why, yes, man! Thou art a priest unto the Lord thy God; thy office is to offer a sacrifice of prayer and praise each day. Ask a Christian what he is. Say to him: “What is your official standing? What are you by office?” Well, if he answers you properly, he will not say, “I am a draper, or druggist,” or anything of that sort. No; he will say, “I am a priest unto my God. The office unto which I am called, is to be the salt of the earth. I am a city set on a hill, a light that cannot be hid. That is my office. My office is not a worldly one.” Whether yours be the office of the minister, or the deacon, or the church member, ye are not of this world in your office, even as Christ was not of the world; your occupation is not a worldly one.

The Wednesday Word: Who is this man Jesus? Part 3

Jesus is the Creator: What a beautiful view of County Sligo!

But not only is the Lord Jesus the Creator, He is the Christ.

By the time Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the people had long held the hope of a coming deliverer to route their enemies. In fact, this expectation of an emancipator began way back in Genesis 3:15 with the promise of the coming seed. This coming one would be a champion of their cause. He would crush the enemy’s head. This anticipated one was their hope. He would overcome all oppressors. Generation after generation added to this expectation as the seers gave prophesy after prophesy concerning Him and His arrival.

This champion would be descended from Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and David. He was to be the anointed one (Psalm 2:2: Daniel 9:26). He would be born of a virgin in Bethlehem (Isaiah 7:14; Micah 5:2). Indeed, so numerous are the prophesies, types and shadows concerning Him, we can sum up the Old Testament with three words, “Behold He Comes.”

Who is this man Jesus?

He is the Christ!

This is what Peter confessed. The Lord asked, “Who do you say that I the Son of man am?” Peter replied, “Thou art the Christ the Son of the living God.” The woman at the well left her water pot and went back to the town, saying, “Come see a man that has told me everything I have done. Is not this the Christ” (John 4:29)? The apostle John asks in 1 John 2:22; “Who is a liar?” Then he informs us that “he that denies that Jesus is the Christ. The same is both a liar and an antichrist.”

When we confess Jesus as the Christ, we are declaring that He is the anointed one. We are affirming that He is the appointed one, chosen to deliver His people from the penalty and power of sin (Luke 4:18; Matthew 1:21).

As the Christ, Jesus fulfills the role of Prophet, Priest and King. He is the prophet, because He spoke the final word of God to man (John 1:1–18; 14:24; Luke 24:19; Hebrews 1:1-3). He is the priest, because His death atones for our sins and reconciles us to the Father (Hebrews 2:17; 4:14). He is the King because all authority is given unto Him (John 18:36; Ephesians 1:20–23; Revelation 19:16).

Who is this man Jesus Christ? He is pictured throughout the Old Testament. Here are but a few of the portraits.

Genesis: The Seed of the Woman

Exodus: The Passover Lamb

Leviticus: The High Priest

Numbers: The Pillar of Cloud and The Pillar of Fire by night Deuteronomy: The Prophet like Moses and the Great Rock

Joshua: The Captain of the Lord of Hosts

Judges: The Judge and Lawgiver

Ruth: The Kinsman Redeemer

1 & 2 Samuel: The Trusted Prophet

1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles: The Reigning King

Ezra: The Lord of Heaven and Earth

Nehemiah: The Rebuilder of the Broken Walls

Esther: Mordecai

Job: The Daysman Mediator

Psalms: The crucified one of Psalm 22

He is the Christ, the prophesied One. He is the One who conquered death and is alive forevermore. You can trust Him with your soul and be safe.

And that’s the Gospel Truth!

The Wednesday Word: Who is this Man Jesus? Part 2

Gregory of Nazianzus, (A.D. 381) said of Jesus,

“He began His ministry by being hungry, yet He is the Bread of Life.

Jesus ended His earthly ministry by being thirsty, yet He is the Living Water.

Jesus was weary, yet He is our rest. Jesus paid tribute, yet He is the King.

Jesus was accused of having a demon, yet He cast out demons.

Jesus wept, yet He wipes away our tears.

Jesus was sold for thirty pieces of silver, yet He redeemed the world.

Jesus was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, yet He is the Good Shepherd.

Jesus died, yet by His death He destroyed the power of death.”

Who is this man Jesus?

He was taken before Pilate and accused of having claimed to be the Son of God. Pilate, the Roman Governor, being greatly troubled and unsettled, confronted Him in the Judgment Hall asking many questions. But, “He answered him not a word” (Matthew 27:14). “He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He opened not His mouth” (Isaiah 53:7).

Who is this man Jesus Christ? Who is Jesus of Nazareth? Who is this man called “the Christ?”

First of all: He is God Almighty.

Don’t misunderstand what I am saying. Jesus was not merely the Son of God or God’s ambassador, or even God’s messenger. He Himself was and is God Almighty. The Scriptures made this clear. They declared, “Behold the Lord Himself will give you a sign; a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son and thou shall call His name Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14) which being interpreted is God with us” (Matthew 1:23}.

In John 10:30, Christ boldly declared; “I and My Father are one.” The disciples said, “Show us the Father.” Jesus replied, “He that hath seen me has seen my Father” (John 14:9). Jesus further makes this great truth clear by saying, “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him” (John 14:7).

Who is this man Jesus? “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God and all things were made by Him; without Him was nothing made that was made” (John 1:1-3).

Who is this man Jesus? He is God come to this earth. He is God in human flesh. Jesus of Nazareth is the living and true God who visited this earth in the “likeness of sinful flesh.” God came to earth and He reconciled us unto Himself in Christ. God was in Christ. “He purchased the church with His own blood.”

And this same Jesus, the God/Man, is our only hope. Some hundreds of years ago, a Monk lay dying in his bed. The priest had come to give him the Final Unction. However, the Monk, in spite of his cloistered life, been exposed to the gospel. To the shock and of the other monks he dispatched the priest, refused the crucifix and ordered his room to be emptied of all the other religious trappings. He then, with dying eyes, looked to heaven and cried, “Tua vulnera, Jesu! Tua vulnera, Jesu!” “Thy wounds, Jesus! Thy wounds, Jesus!”

This man knew who Jesus was. He knew we are not saved by anything we can do, but by that which the God/Man has done for us. We are not saved by what we have suffered, but by what Christ has endured. “Tua vulnera, Jesu! Tua vulnera, Jesu!” Our everlasting hope was hung upon the cross. In His doing, dying and rising again is all our acceptance before God. We are called to trust in Christ in life and in death.

Who is this man Jesus Christ? He is the God/Man and He is our only Saviour.

And that’s the Gospel Truth!

Christ prayed for a special people

Spurgeon 6“They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” — John 17:16.

Christ’s prayer was for a special people. He declared that he did not offer an universal intercession. “I pray for them,” said he. “I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me, for they are thine.” In reading this beautiful prayer through, only one question arises to our minds; Who are the people that are described as “them,” or as “they?” Who are these favored individuals, who share a Savior’s prayers, are recognized by a Savior’s love, have their names written on the stones of his precious breastplate, and have their character and their circumstances mentioned by the lips of the High Priest before the throne on high? The answer to that question is supplied by the words of our text. The people for whom Christ prays are an unearthly people. They are a people somewhat above the world, distinguished altogether from it. “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.”

I shall treat my text, first of all, doctrinally; secondly, experimentally; and thirdly, practically.
