The Wednesday Word: Invasion of the ‘List Men’

February 20, 2019 Leave a comment

‘List-Men’ is another term for legalizers… so-called because they come armed with lists of things for us to do (and not to do) so that we may gain acceptance from the Father in Heaven.

Their gospel (which is no Gospel at all) teaches Christ plus something else. They always add to the Finished Work teaching that, for salvation, we need more than Christ alone.

They accuse true Gospel Believers of being Antinomian, … (an odd term by which they charge that our preaching and believing is against the law). Regardless of their charges, Grace Believers strenuously oppose any law being put in the place of the Gospel. Only the doing, dying and rising again of the Lord Jesus gives us eternal life. Our salvation is found entirely and utterly in His obedience on our behalf.

However, we take encouragement from Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones, the great expository preacher of the last century, who said, “The true preaching of the gospel of salvation by grace alone always leads to the possibility of this charge (Antinomianism) being brought against it.

(Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Romans 6).

The List -Men came in all shapes and sizes. When I was growing up, the List-Men had us persuaded that men could only wear dark clothes. They ruled that no one was allowed to go to the cinema. Theirfavourite line was “what would Jesus say if He came back and found you standing in the line to purchase a ticket for the movies.” Many and varied were their demands…which must be adhered to if ever there was to be a hope of being saved.

This was the kind of thing that was happening to the Galatians. The List-Men of their generation taught that the Gospel wasn’t enough. They insisted that circumcision needed to be added. As a result, the Galatians had left the Gospel and were following hard after these wretched List-Men. They were in an anti-Gospel spiral.

Paul, moved by the Holy Spirit, felt so strongly about this that he wrote in Galatians 1:6-7, “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:”

Then in verse 8 “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”

Paul was talking about two different gospels, not two different interpretations of the same gospel.

There are two gospels. One is false the other true.

In one,man stands before God on the basis of human merit.

In the other, he stands before God on the merits of Jesus Christ alone.

In one, man stands before God in the righteousness of what he has accomplished.

In the other, man stands before God recognizing that there is nothing he can do to satisfy God’s just demands. He knows he cannot do anything to satisfy God but that Christ has met all needed requirements on his behalf.

One teaches ‘Do.’

The other teaches ‘Done’

If you are a List-Man you should consider these words of Jesus, “It is Finished”(John 19:30). By this, Christ meant all of the types, symbols, emblems, and the institutions of the Old Testament—the priesthood, the temple, the altar, the sacrifice, all of it—was finished. No rules and regulations are now needed for salvation, just Christ alone!

Furthermore, Christ’s finished work was confirmed by the torn veil in the Temple (Matthew 27:51). The torn veil cries out, “It is Finished.” That 60 feet long, embroidered curtain was torn from the top to the bottom. What an act of God to demonstrate that the Old economy was gone.

So away with your lists. Who do you think you are to presume to add to The Finished Work of the young Prince of Glory?

“A curse upon you if you do” (Galatians 1:8).

And that’s the Gospel Truth!

Another Gospel

Thomas Oden, long time professor of Theology and Ethics at DrewUniversity, for years wrote volume after volume elaborating and espousing the latest theories and practices — successful, up-to-date, modern, in the best liberal tradition — yet somehow he remained dissatisfied. So, quite a while ago now, he shifted gears sharply and produced a volume entitled Agenda for Theology. Toward its beginning, he recounted a dream, from which the only scene he could remember took place in the New Haven cemetery. As he wandered through the graveyard, he accidentally stumbled over his own tombstone. Naturally, he stopped to read the epitaph, which said, ‘He made no new contribution to theology.’ That does not sound too complimentary on the face of it, especially for one whose mentors and colleagues aimed self-consciously at offering new contributions to the field. Surprisingly enough, then, Oden reports not being dismayed by this final evaluation of his work but rather tremendously reassured. Why so? Because he had come to believe that the last thing we need is supposed ‘improvements,’ embellishments, or additions to the fundamental apostolic teaching. What we do need is the plain gospel of Jesus Christ, kept intact and rightly expounded in our age and every age.

Seducers have a Sleight to Deceive

Seducers are the devil’s factors; they are of all others the greatest felons that would rob you of the truth. Seducers have silver tongues, that can put off bad wares; they have a sleight to deceive. Eph 4:14. The Greek word there is taken from those that can throw dice, and cast them for the best advantage. So seducers are impostors, they can throw a dice; they can so dissemble and sophisticate the truth, that they can deceive others.

A Testimony from one delivered from Charismatic Doctrines

I came across a letter on the internet of a woman who was delivered from the false doctrines of the Charismatic movement. I wanted to pass this letter along in order to help some soul who is still bound by this movement. I hope and pray that you are blessed by this letter.

Hello SisterTracy,

I want to thank you for your wonderful site. When I first came across it, about a year and a half ago, I was a Charismatic who adhered to the NIV (although I rarely read the Bible!). When I first read some of your articles (particularly against Charismatics and the NIV “translation”), I was so furious! I started to study some things, in an effort to prove you wrong, but all I ended up doing was proving that you were right. A few months ago, I tossed out all of my new age Bibles and bought an AKJV. It’s truly amazing, before when I had the supposedly “easy to read” Bibles handy, I couldn’t get motivated to read them. I just couldn’t bring myself to read them. Now, with my AKJV, I read it with no problem at all. I love the Word of God, love studying it, love reading it. A few weeks ago, I also left the Charismatic church I had been attending on and off for nearly eight years of my life. After visiting your site, I started noticing things that you mentioned, like the tongues and the “holy laughter” and being “slain the spirit” and all. As I read my KJV more and more, I started repenting for ever participating in these things. You see, at one point in time I spoke in tongues, and participated in “holy laughter,” and was even supposedly “slain in the spirit.” I have ceased from all of this and repented before my Lord Jesus of ever being involved. I now attend a Baptist church, I plan on becoming a member soon and being rebaptized (I was baptized in the Charismatic church, but I want to disassociate myself from all things and events in that church). I can’t explain things that went on in that church, but now that I look back I can say that they weren’t of God.
